Major Arcana
The Lovers
The choice
Upright meaning
A significant choice, usually about values rather than romance alone. This card asks what you actually want.
Reversed meaning
Discord, a poor choice, or avoiding the decision. Two sets of values that do not match.
What is in the picture
A naked man and woman stand beneath the angel Raphael. Behind her, a tree with a serpent coiled in it; behind him, a tree in flames. A mountain rises between them. Note where everyone is looking: he looks at her, she looks up at the angel. The card does not show an embrace — it shows the moment before a choice, and how differently two people find their answers.
Love
A deep connection, but possibly a fork in the road for the relationship.
Career
A choice between two directions. Choose on values, not on money.
One thing you can do
Write down three values you will not trade away. Then hold the decision up against those three lines. This card always answers in values, never in benefits.
Is The Lovers a yes or a no?
Yes, but only if you actually choose rather than let it happen to you. This card has no patience for drift.
Beside another card
A card changes meaning according to what sits next to it. These are the two most common pairings — tap through to read the other card.
