The twelve signs divide the circle the Sun appears to travel into twelve equal parts of thirty degrees each. Your sign is the part the Sun was crossing when you were born. This is the tropical zodiac, and it is anchored to the equinox rather than to the constellations.

Elements and modalities

The twelve are arranged along two crossing axes, and this is the genuinely useful part of astrology — more so than the personality descriptions.

• Four elements: Fire acts, Earth holds, Air connects, Water feels.
• Three modalities: Cardinal starts things, Fixed sustains them, Mutable adapts when they change.

Each sign is a unique pairing — Aries is cardinal Fire, Leo fixed Fire, Sagittarius mutable Fire. Three signs share an element and behave nothing alike, which is exactly why reading by element alone always feels wrong.

The Sun sign is not the chart

What people call my sign is only the Sun sign — one of dozens of factors in a full birth chart. Two others come up constantly:

• The Moon sign — needs an accurate birth time. The emotional life and the private reactions.
• The Ascendant, or rising sign — needs the time and the place. How you arrive in front of strangers.

Many people find their Sun sign description completely wrong. The usual reason is a strong Ascendant, which is what other people are actually seeing.

Born on a cusp

The changeover date is not fixed from year to year. The Sun enters a sign at a specific moment, and that moment shifts by nearly a day depending on the year. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign, this site says it cannot be certain rather than picking a side for tidiness — settling it needs a birth time.

Why the descriptions feel so accurate

Sign descriptions are usually written to fit almost anyone: independent but capable of deep loyalty, confident with a private streak of doubt. Read one for a sign that is not yours and it will often fit just as well. Psychologists call this the Barnum effect, after the showman, and it is the single strongest explanation for astrology feeling accurate.

This is not an argument for ignoring it. It is an argument for reading actively: notice the lines that do not fit, because those are the ones carrying information about you rather than about the writing.

Why the signs no longer match the constellations

The Earth's axis wobbles very slowly, one full turn roughly every 26,000 years, an effect called precession. The Western zodiac was fixed about two thousand years ago, so by now the signs have drifted almost a full sign away from the constellations they are named after.

This is sometimes produced as proof that astrology is wrong. It really only shows that the tropical zodiac measures seasons rather than constellations — astrologers know this and do not hide it. The real difficulty lies elsewhere: controlled studies have not found a link between planetary positions at birth and personality. This site puts astrology alongside the other tools because it asks a good set of questions, not because it measures anything.
