What the 22 Major Arcana are about, and why they weigh more

When several Major Arcana turn up in one spread, the situation is usually larger than you thought. Here is the structure of the twenty-two and how to read them as a group.
The 78-card deck splits into two very different halves. The 56 Minor Arcana deal with ordinary life: work, money, feeling, conversations. The 22 Major Arcana deal with the large themes — the things that shape a whole stretch rather than a week.
Three passages
- The Fool to The Chariot (0–7): forming a self in the outer world — learning, choosing, asserting.
- Strength to Temperance (8–14): the turn inward — reviewing, releasing, balancing.
- The Devil to The World (15–21): transformation — facing the shadow, collapse, and rebuilding at another scale.
Why Death and The Tower are not what their names suggest
These two alarm newcomers most, and both are about a structure ending rather than a person. Death is an orderly ending — one chapter closing so the next can open. The Tower is an abrupt one: what was built on a false foundation eventually comes down. What they share is that the thing removed had usually stopped fitting a long time ago.
