The sixty-year cycle: why sixty was treated as a full life

Ten heavenly stems paired with twelve earthly branches give exactly sixty combinations. That number shaped how a life was counted.
People usually give their age as an animal and stop there. But the animal is only half of a year's name. The other half is the heavenly stem, and a year's full name always carries both — Giáp Thìn, Ất Tỵ, and so on.
Why sixty and not a hundred and twenty
Ten stems and twelve branches sound as if they should give 120 pairs. But they do not combine freely: both advance one step a year, so a stem always meets a branch of matching parity. Only 60 combinations ever occur — the lowest common multiple of 10 and 12.
Sixty years is how long a combination takes to come round. Someone born in a Giáp Thìn year meets Giáp Thìn again at sixty — not any Dragon year, but that one.
Why sixty carries ceremony
Across East Asia the mark is read as completing a full turn, and a sixtieth birthday means something different from an ordinary one. In Japan it is kanreki, and the person traditionally wears red — the colour of an infant — because they have begun the second turn.
That detail says a great deal about the thinking behind it. This is not a linear count of years but a cyclical one. Sixty years is not a long stretch; it is one lap.
What it changes when reading compatibility
A great deal. Two Dragons born twelve years apart carry different stems, and therefore different elements. Most traditional interpretation reads the stem-branch pair, not the animal alone.
So when someone says "Dragons go well with Rats", they are using a fraction of the information. It is not wrong, but it is coarse — rather like describing a person by their birth month.
