Born in January or early February — which animal sign?

The most frequent question about the Vietnamese zodiac, and the answer depends on the Tet date of the exact year you were born.

The animal sign follows the lunar year, not the Gregorian one. The lunar year begins on the first day of Tet, which falls somewhere between 21 January and 20 February depending on the year.
Three cases
- Born 1–20 January: certainly the animal of the previous Gregorian year, because Tet has never come earlier than 21 January.
- Born 21 February onwards: certainly the animal of the current year, because Tet has never come later than 20 February.
- Born between 21 January and 20 February: you need that year's Tet date to be sure.
In 1968, Vietnam and China kept new year a day apart
The lunar calendar is not a book of fixed dates but a calculation: a month begins at the new moon, and that instant has to be resolved against a particular time zone. Change the zone and, in some years, a month boundary lands on a different day.
In 1967 North Vietnam moved its official time from UTC+8 to UTC+7. The consequence showed up at the very next new year: the new moon fell at an hour that sat between two midnights, so measured in Vietnamese time, Tết in 1968 arrived a day earlier than it did measured in Beijing time.
That is not a footnote for calendar-makers. It means two people born on the same day, one in Hanoi and one in Guangzhou, are assigned different animal signs — and both assignments are correct by the calendar each of them was using.
The lesson is not that the lunar calendar is imprecise. The opposite: it is precise enough to be sensitive to things like a time zone. If your birth date sits near the Tết boundary, your animal sign is a conditional answer rather than a plain fact.
Why we do not guess
The Thấu Mình zodiac tool resolves the first two cases with certainty. For the third it says plainly that it is not sure and gives both candidates, rather than picking one. A silently wrong result is worse than an honest "we cannot tell".
For example, Tet in 1990 fell on 27 January. Someone born on 20 January 1990 belongs to Kỷ Tỵ, the year of 1989; someone born on 30 January 1990 is Canh Ngọ.
