Work with a person at the centre

Work matters to you when it affects a particular person. You will give time to listening, guiding and staying alongside, and you remember people's names and their circumstances. Many who lead on this type struggle to last in purely numerical work regardless of the pay.

Where you are strong

  • You build trust quickly
  • You are patient with someone else's slow progress
  • You notice early when somebody is struggling
  • You can explain something complicated to someone who does not know it

Worth watching

  • You absorb other people's feelings
  • Hard to say no when someone needs help
  • You may neglect your own development

Putting it to use

Fields worth investigating: education and training, HR, counselling, healthcare, social work, community management, senior client work, organisational development. The environment that suits you measures results by change in people, not by targets alone.

Under pressure

Of the six types, this one burns out on giving most easily. The sign to watch: you start feeling irritated by the very people you are helping — that is not a loss of kindness, it is an empty battery.

And you?

The other results

The Holland model is widely used in careers guidance and has a reasonably solid research base for that purpose. Understand its limits, though: it measures interest, not ability, and it does not predict how well you will do. A result suggests directions to look into, not a list of jobs you should or should not take.
