2029 for Canh Ngọ 1990, men: turning forty, and the star of money

The middle Tam Tai year, the counting age of forty, and Thái Bạch, the star folk sayings tie to emptied purses. What in this year is worth worrying about, and what is only noise.

Older Vietnamese have a saying about the nine watching stars: “Thái Bạch sweeps the house clean.” In 2029, for men born in 1990, that star lands exactly on the counting age of forty.

Forty is already a milestone everyone takes stock at. Add a star associated with losing money, and the year easily becomes a year of money worries. This separates the part worth worrying about from the part that is only noise.

The middle of Tam Tai

2029 is Kỷ Dậu, nạp âm Đại Trạch Thổ, the same as 2028. It is the second of the Horse's three Tam Tai years.

This is not in any almanac but it is in how people work: in any long stretch, the middle is the hardest part to hold. At the start there is resolve, at the end the finish is in sight, and in the middle there is neither. If you decided to keep your head down through Tam Tai, 2029 is the year that decision is tested, not by an event but by boredom.

Thái Bạch, and the swept-out house

Thái Bạch is the old name for the planet Venus. Among the nine watching stars it is graded heavy, and its classical warning is specific: money going out faster than it comes in, and expenses nobody saw coming.

The most useful way to read the saying is as a prompt to check your cash flow, not as a prophecy. At forty most people carry more fixed costs than at any other time: children in school, parents beginning to need care, a mortgage. A year that tells you to be careful with money arriving at exactly that moment is sensible advice wherever it comes from.

Earth meets earth, again

The year's nạp âm is still Đại Trạch Thổ, the same element as roadside earth. As in 2028 this is sameness: solid, not swept away, easy to stand still. Forty divided by nine leaves 4, so Kim Lâu does not apply, but the year is still inside Tam Tai, so on building the two rules do not yet agree.

The four areas in 2029

Love. Forty is when many couples look up and find they have been living side by side like two people running a household rather than two people in love. The long boredom of a middle Tam Tai year sharpens that feeling. One small thing worth doing: one evening a month for just the two of you, with no talk of money and none of the children.

Work. Tam Tai still advises against anything large. The narrow overlap between that advice and turning forty is to learn something with a start date and an end date. It moves you forward steadily without being a big bet.

The household. This is where Thái Bạch speaks most directly. Practically: at the start of the year, sit down with your partner and list every regular monthly outgoing. Most households that do this find at least one payment they had forgotten they were still making.

Everyone else. An acquaintance asking to borrow money is the situation both Tam Tai and Thái Bạch point at. If you want to help, lend only what you are willing never to get back, and tell yourself so before you hand it over.

One line for each thing

  • The real risk is the boredom of the middle year, not an event.
  • Thái Bạch: a prompt to check cash flow at the age with the most fixed costs.
  • Lending: only what you are prepared to lose.
